The Hermetic Principles for Self-Mastery

The universe operates on natural laws. When you understand these laws you can use them. You can bend gravity to fly and use the knowledge of the meaning of life and death to live better lives.

The seven Hermetic principles originate from the 1st century AD. Hermes Trismegistus (Thoth from ancient Egypt) is credited as the founding father of Hermeticism. The Freemasons rediscovered the Hermetic Principles in the Kybalion text originating from Byzantine. Hermeticism is still practiced today across the world.

Hermeticism is compatible with modern science, many religions, and also atheism.  It describes the basic fabric of reality in an elegant timeless fashion. Everything is interconnected and you have the ability to create positive change.

The Seven Hermetic Principles

Each of the seven Hermetic principles helps you understand the universe from a different perspective. They also help you make practical decisions that lead you towards your true purpose. They work hand in hand with the laws of attraction and manifestation.

1.Principle of Mentalism: “The all is mind; the universe is mental.”

Fundamentally, everything in the universe is mental.  Everything is non-physical and generated by mind. The Universe can itself be seen as a living mind that is connected to all other minds. So every thought you have and every action you make interacts with the greater mind or mental realm of the universe.

We are all one and your environment is an important part of you. Understand the truth of Mentalism to grasp how you can shape reality using thoughts alone.

If you think the right thoughts then the right actions will follow. It is vital to plan carefully, to spend time reflecting on your true passions, and to identify your life’s purpose. Then your thoughts are aligned with the Universe to create the reality you desire.

2. The Principle of Correspondence: “As above, so below, as below, so above. As within, so without, as without, so within.”

Continuous communication occurs between the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions. If you want to understand the patterns you experience in your life then you need to look at all three realms of experience.

Accept that you cannot access all of the planes of existence. A keenly honed sense of intuition can help you tap into aspects of the higher and lower planes. Pay attention to your gut feelings to help you make sense of the connection between your everyday experiences and the spiritual plane.

Repeating patterns, small and large, occur through this principle. Consider the repeating themes in your own life and reflect on the relationship between your mental, physical, and spiritual aspects.

3. The Principle of Vibration: “Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.”

On all planes of existence all things carry their own unique energy. Even the smallest particle in the universe has a vibrational frequency that affects everything surrounding it like ripples in a wave.

High energy particles are attuned and magnetically drawn towards one another. Low energy particles gravitate towards other sources of low energy. Like attracts like. You experience a happy and fulfilling life through being a source of high energy.

If you increase your vibrational frequency you attract more positive events, people, and possessions into your life. However it will be hard to attract what you desire if you are negative.  Your thoughts can be fine-tuned so that your vibrational frequency increases so as to experience major positive life changes.

4. The Principle of Polarity: “Everything is dual; everything has poles and everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.”

All things in your life have an opposite or pole.  The polarity of life’s experiences helps you avoid taking things for granted. It would be difficult for you to appreciate abundance without knowing what lack is like.

Everything has a dual nature. Everyone experiences love and hate, sadness and joy, and positivity and negativity. Recognize these contrasts and reflect on what they mean to you. Use your willpower to align yourself with the positive pole as much as possible.

Reflect on the contrasts that boost your vibration. For every bad or difficult thing challenge yourself to remember at least one good thing. Also realize that what will work for you may be illuminated by what does not work well for you.

5. The Principle of Rhythm: Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall.”

Everything is in constant motion. There is a pattern to the changes you experience. Everything goes through cycles from birth to death and then rebirth. This Principle applies to all phenomena that are based on time including the seasons, the lunar cycle, and your body. Like a ticking clock, there is predictability and inevitability to the rhythm of life. Nothing in life is ever still.

Everything is impermanent. Death is the inevitable consequence of the rolling of the waves of time over the seas of your life. All you have is the present moment, the now. Focus on the present moment to reduce and eliminate past memories and future anxieties that would otherwise zap your energy or lower your vibration.

6. The Principle of Cause & Effect: “Every cause has its effect; every effect has its cause.”

All your actions and experiences are related to other events. For every action there is a reaction. Everything happens for a reason and there is no such thing as pure luck or chance. If you become a more active agent in your life then you become the “cause” more than the “effect”. Decide who you want to be and what you want to do. Then plan out the steps to take to attain those goals.

Consider the far-reaching impact of your choices and decisions.  Also look at the way things influence you and the synchronicities experienced. If you create a richer and more positive inner world, then you will create positive changes on the outside.

7. The Principle of Gender: “Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and feminine principles.”

The masculine and feminine is in everything that is physical, mental and spiritual. Gender deals with the notion of feminine masculine energies being different. Masculine energy is perceived as assertive, exploratory and transformative. Feminine energy is reflective, protective and nourishing. You are at your best when you know how to utilise both energies wisely.

The Principle of Gender inspires you to activate and balance your masculine and feminine aspects. An excess of either can lower your vibrational frequency. Too much feminine energy can lead to inaction. If you have an excess of masculine energy then recklessness and lethargy arise.

Choose the middle path between the extremes of the feminine and masculine and seek balance in all things as the Buddha did. This is the key to using all seven Hermetic Principles fully to achieve lasting self-mastery whilst steadfastly and lovingly being on the path of discovery and insight.
